No-Sew Face Mask FAQs
Want to make a face mask but don’t know how to sew? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! We recently just launched three no-sew face mask tutorials! Two with, Craft Box Girls on our Facebook page, and another with Amanda Perna on our YouTube channel. We are grateful to be able to provide such useful and educational content during this difficult time. Since the release of our tutorials, there have been some questions that we would like to address in regards to our tutorials specifically.
Important note: These masks are NOT hospital compliant. They are for your own personal use. A DIY face mask is not a replacement for a surgical mask but should be used for your own protection if you must go out in public. As more information about the COVID-19 pandemic develops, some information in this post may have changed, so please check your local news or CDC guidelines for the most up to date information.
If I don’t know how to sew, can I still make my own face mask?
Yes. You can use Beacon Fabri-Tac. Fabri-Tac is a great alternative for those who don’t know how to sew or choose not to. It is a permanent, washable glue and is otherwise known as the glue gun in a bottle.
Why do people prefer mask making with Fabri-Tac rather than a hot glue gun?
Fabri-Tac has the strength of a hot glue gun, without the dangerous temperature or the cloudiness when it dries.
If I am applying glue to my face mask, is it safe to wear?
Yes. Fabri-Tac is no longer toxic after it is completely dry. We recommend waiting 24 hours for the glue to dry before wearing your face mask.
Can I wash my face mask after I have made it?
Yes. Fabri-Tac is a washable, permanent adhesive. We recommend waiting 24 hours for the glue to dry before throwing your face mask in the wash.
Can I put my mask in the dryer?
Yes. After the Fabri-Tac is completely dry, the mask is safe to go in the dryer on a light or delicate setting. You can also hang dry your mask if needed.
Will the glue stand up to boiling water?
We recommend testing this on some scrap fabric first, but after you let the glue dry for 24 hours, it should withstand boiling water. Leaving the mask in the boiling water for 10 minutes should be sufficient, in order to sanitize it. @ocvintagecharm actually tested this out on some scrap fabric after one of her followers asked her this question!
What if I don’t have the materials to make this face mask?
Look around your house, you may be surprised that you already have a lot of the materials! For example, you can use an old t-shirt as the covering and hair ties/headbands as your elastic to tie your mask.
Are these masks a replacement for surgical masks or N95 respirators?
No, these masks are NOT CDC approved. They are for your own personal use.
