We totally love this latest project from Beacon Maker, Jennifer Hottinger Sloan. Its edgy, gothic, contains skulls and should be given a rock star status.
Give Jennifer some paper, ink, glue and you will get something amazing just like this handmade altered art piece. You could use this concept for a greeting card, as a wall plaque or create onto a canvas tote. To make this, all you need are a few supplies. So lets get started and see how Jennifer made this super cool piece!
- Makers Mix DIY Concrete, Beacon Adhesives
- Mixed Media Glue, Beacon Adhesives

- Metal Plaque, Michael’s Stores
- 6 x 6 Chipboard panel called Chicken Wire, Creative Embellishment Designs

- Black Glimmer Mist, Tattered Angels
- Other; Acetate Wings, Rhinestones-Prima, Metal Key
This little project started with metal plaque from Michael’s that had a red heart printed on it with distressed words around it. If I recall correctly I found it in the dollar bin! On top of the heart I placed a Creative Embellishments laser cut chipboard that I misted with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – black and let dry. This chipboard design is a 6 x 6 panel which is called Chicken Wire. I attached the chipboard to the tin using Beacon’s Mixed Media adhesive. Once secured, I outlined the chipboard with some blingy black rhinestones using Beacon’s Gem-Tac glue. If you have not checked out Creative Embellishment designs you must they are awesome!
While contemplating the rest of the design, I mixed up a small amount of Makers Mix Concrete and placed in it a Makin’s Clay mold. In about 50 minutes I had made several small Maker Mix flowers to use on my project. I left them “o” natural and placed them aside till I needed them. Makers Mix was so easy to use, just followed the instructions on the package and TADA…great little flower embellishments.
On the back of the skull I attached two little acetate wings and then attached the skull to the chipboard. I decorated the skull with some Prima rhinestone and an antique vintage find in the shape of a feather plume. I added the Makers Mix flower on last to finish off the head piece. All of these items were attached using Mixed Media adhesive.
I misted another Creative Embellishment chipboard piece “love” with Tattered Angels Red Chalkboard paint and a wooden “imagine” colored in a similar manner and added them to the project. After this I added some additional embellishments including some red heart buttons, more Prima bling, a metal key and another Makers Mix flower. All embellishments were attached with Beacon’s Mixed Media adhesives. I love that you can attach so many different items with the same glue!
